Synopsis/Details

La Vestale (The Vestal Virgin)

Tragédie lyrique in three acts (1807)
Music by Gaspare Spontini
Libretto by Victor-Joseph Étienne de Jouy

Language: Performed in French with German and English surtitles

Julia is ready to break the law imposed upon her and allows her beloved Licinius to come to the place where she must guard a sacred fire at night. The Vestal Virgin, priestess of the goddess Vesta, defies both the “sacred law” and the high priest who enforces it. Julia follows her love and thus human nature itself. For the High Vestal, however, love is “a barbaric monster” and an enemy of the goddess Vesta, whose ever-burning flame must be protected by the chaste Vestals.

La Vestale brought Gaspare Spontini his greatest success to date in 1807 in Napoleonic Paris. From 1820 to 1841, he served as Prussian General Music Director and led the Royal Opera in Berlin. With its large-scale scenes, La Vestale became one of the most successful operas of the 19th century. Its complex choral writing, instrumental effects, and ballet music influenced composers such as Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz. In her production, Lydia Steier—who most recently staged Les Contes d’Hoffmann here—explores the ruthless mechanisms of an autocratic regime.
