CalendarWed 24 Mar 2027
Synopsis/Details

Founded in 1986, the Taiwan Philharmonic is regarded as one of Asia’s finest orchestras. Each season, the orchestra presents around 80 events, including concerts, chamber music evenings, operas, and crossover productions. It has made a sustained commitment to promoting Taiwanese composers by regularly commissioning new works and performing and recording their music. As Taiwan’s national symphony orchestra, it combines the international orchestral tradition with the cultural identity of its home country and, since its founding, has played a major role in bringing Taiwanese music and culture to concert stages around the world.

In Berlin, the Taiwan Philharmonic will perform under the direction of Jun Märkl together with Arabella Steinbacher. The German-Japanese violinist is one of the world’s most acclaimed performers in her field. Her playing combines technical precision with great expressiveness, warmth, and a distinctive tonal elegance. Steinbacher studied in the distinguished Munich violin school of Ana Chumachenco, which has also produced musicians such as Julia Fischer and Lisa Batiashvili.

The centrepiece of the evening will be Max Bruch’s famous Violin Concerto No. 1, a masterpiece of lyrical beauty and virtuoso brilliance, alongside Richard Strauss’s monumental tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra. The programme will be complemented by Tao of Meinong by Taiwanese composer Yuan-Chen Li.

The Berlin concert will also be a special highlight of the orchestra’s 2027 European tour, which will take it to renowned concert halls in London, Birmingham, Norwich, and Sheffield, among other cities.

Venue
Berliner Philharmonie

The Berliner Philharmonie is a concert hall in Berlin, Germany. Home to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the building is acclaimed for both its acoustics and its architecture.

The Philharmonie lies on the south edge of the city's Tiergarten and just west of the former Berlin Wall, an area that for decades suffered from isolation and drabness but that today offers ideal centrality, greenness, and accessibility. Its cross street and postal address is Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße, named for the orchestra's longest-serving principal conductor. The neighborhood, often dubbed the Kulturforum, can be reached on foot from the Potsdamer Platz station.

Actually a two-venue facility with connecting lobby, the Philharmonie comprises a Großer Saal of 2,440 seats for orchestral concerts and a chamber-music hall, the Kammermusiksaal, of 1,180 seats. Though conceived together, the smaller venue was added only in the 1980s.
