Manon Lescaut

Dramma lirico in four acts (1893)

Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Marco Praga, Domenico Oliva, Giulio Ricordi, Luigi Illica and others, based on the novel by Abbé Prévost

Language: Performed in Italian with German and English surtitles

Recommended age: 14 and up

Manon Lescaut enjoys the admiration of the men who long for her. Her brother follows their father's plan to protect her from men by placing her in a convent. The wealthy Geronte seeks to lure her into his world, but she gives her love to the young Des Grieux and escapes her brother's control. Soon afterwards, however, she succumbs to Geronte's material temptations and becomes dependent on him. Yet her love for Des Grieux leads her to seek once again to leave the life she has entered.

With his operatic adaptation of Abbé Prévost's novel—already brought to the stage by Jules Massenet in 1884—Giacomo Puccini began his rise to fame in Turin in 1893 as one of the most successful opera composers of all time. Through radiant orchestral colors and refined melodies, Puccini brings the emotional worlds of his characters vividly to life. Bertrand de Billy returns to the State Opera to conduct this production. In his staging, Johannes Erath explores the longings and dreams of the heroine and the men who surround her.
