The universe and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – bringing together the sense of wonder inspired by these two cosmoses is the aim of Bach in Space: breathtaking images of outer space projected onto a large screen are paired with the composer’s music, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in a unique experience. Following the great success of the tour in German-speaking countries, Bach in Space returns to the Konzerthaus Berlin in 2027. While NASA footage of planets, galaxies and our Earth is shown, Mona Asuka performs a carefully selected programme of Bach’s works on the piano. The German-Japanese pianist, who performs with numerous renowned orchestras around the world, draws much of her musical understanding from experiences beyond music itself. Her performance of Bach’s works, combined with a simultaneous view into the vastness of the universe, opens up new perspectives on music and the cosmos. Audiences and the press have been enthusiastic about previous performances of the project; the Münchner Merkur described it as an “otherworldly Bach.”
